Today, we want to talk about a recent bicycle versus motorcycle accident in our area that highlights the dangers of bicycle impacts.
A teen boy was riding his bike on West Bartges Street near LaSalle Drive on the morning of June 21 when he was struck by a motorcyclist. Witnesses said that three motorcycles were traveling at a high rate of speed when two of them changed lanes to avoid hitting the teen on his bike. The third cyclist struck the boy from behind.
The boy died from his injuries.
“I can honestly say speed was a factor in this accident, so we’re just saying slow down and be aware of your surroundings when you’re traveling and watch out for the kids,” said Akron Police Lt. Edwards.
We know that bicyclists are extremely vulnerable in and around the roadways. They have virtually no protection from an impact with a passenger vehicle or a heavy motorcycle. Nearly all bicycle accidents result in an injury or a death.
During the reporting year 2017 in Ohio, there was a total of 19 bicycle crash fatalities and 1,239 bicycle crash injuries.

These injuries can lead to major medical expenses for victims and their families. All too often, as we saw in the story above, the negligence of others on the roadway causes these injuries.
