When people are driving on the roadways in and around Cleveland, the last thing they should have to worry about is an accident involving a large semi-truck. These vehicles can inflict significant damages on traditional passenger cars, and the reality is large truck crashes are not uncommon. Recently, there was a three-car crash in Cleveland involving a semi-truck carrying thousands of gallons of industrial alcohol, a highly flammable material.

What Happened In This Cleveland Semi-truck Crash?

The July 25th, 2020, three-car crash that occurred in Cleveland at E. 152nd St. and Darwin Ave could have been much worse than it was. This crash involved a semi-truck that was carrying 6,000 gallons of industrial alcohol, a material that is highly flammable. When officials arrived at the scene of the incident, the large commercial truck was in danger of tipping over onto the street. Thankfully, authorities were able to get a tow truck to the scene quickly enough to upright the semi.

Cleveland authorities say that nobody was injured in the accident.

Semi-truck Crashes Can Lead To Severe Injuries

While we are grateful that nobody was injured in that semi-truck crash, we do know that these large vehicles can cause substantial injuries to those inside passenger vehicles in the event of collision occurs. Data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) shows that a semi-truck can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. In many cases, like the incident mentioned above, large trucks are carrying hazardous materials.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, there were more than 23,000 total crashes involving mid- to heavy-weight trucks during the latest reporting year of data. Unfortunately, 192 people were killed in these collisions, and there were more than 4,600 total injuries.

In the aftermath of a collision with a large commercial truck, it is not uncommon for drivers and passengers in regular vehicles to sustain the following:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries with paralysis
  • Open head wounds
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Crush injuries

Collisions with large trucks are more likely to result in fatalities for those involved in the crash, leaving grieving family members wondering what happened and trying to seek closure.
