A Man Lost His Son. Now He Wants Answers

Lake County jail is accused of withholding the medication and health equipment that cost Randy Wiertella his life. His father has brought a wrongful death suit in Cleveland against the jail.Randy was stopped for speeding and having a loud muffler in December. According to court records, the officers found a gun in his car. Randy was arrested for "improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle."Randy duly informed the officers at the jail about his medical conditions. He suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and sleep apnea. The latter required a CPAP machine for Randy to breathe. Randy also needed medication. Despite continuously asking for his medication and CPAP machine, jail officers never complied, costing Randy his life. He was the father of three and only 44 years old.The wrongful death suit alleges the jail officers acted "with deliberate indifference to the serious medical needs of (the) individuals in custody."

What Are the Medical Rights of Inmates in Ohio?

The Eighth Amendment demands that people in jail receive adequate medical care and the basic needs of food, water, and shelter. However, across the country, we see a rise in inmates' death, whose safety has become as lost and ignored in our judicial system as the penny we lost on the couch. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics,

  • In the last reporting year, people incarcerated have increased by 500% during the previous 40 years.
  • Inmate deaths have increased 3% from the previous year
  • State prisons have seen a higher mortality rate since data collection began in 2001

Why is this happening? Why are our citizens being ignored? Why is our constitution being ignored?
