Today, we are going to talk about a recent wrong-way crash that critically injured a State Highway Patrol trooper.

The trooper is in critical condition

On June 27, an Ohio State Patrol trooper was driving down Interstate 71 when he was struck head-on by a driver going the wrong way. Trooper Jason Phillips, 23, was pulled to safety by another motorist after the collision before both vehicles caught fire.

Phillips had been dispatched to the interstate after receiving calls that a vehicle was driving erratically. According to police, that vehicle made a U-turn down the wrong way and collided with Phillips.

“All I saw was smoke and fire,” said Kojo Tsiboe, the man who pulled Phillips to safety. “And you see the trooper in his vehicle with all his airbags deployed, unconscious.”

Tsiboe could not open the patrol car door and used a wrench to break the window and get the trooper out. Phillips was flown to Ohio State University Medical Center and was in critical but stable condition. The driver who hit Phillips was also listed as being in critical condition.

What are the numbers?

For the year 2017 in Ohio, we know that there was a total of 303,298 vehicle crashes. Out of those, there were:

  • 1,179 fatalities

Vehicle crash injuries can lead to major medical expenses for victims and their families. Consider the following injuries we commonly deal with after a crash:

  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations
