What happened in this case?

We have learned that the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving an RTA bus in Cleveland. The crash happened at approximately 10:30 PM on August 17 at the intersection of East 30th Street and Woodland Avenue.Initial reports that we have seen say that an RTA bus was going through the green light when it was hit by an SUV that did not have the right-of-way and likely ran the red light. Cleveland EMS says that it took 11 passengers from the bus, along with the driver, to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.Police say that they suspect alcohol is a factor in this crash.

Alcohol is a major contributor to vehicle accidents in Ohio

When we look at the reporting year 2017 of data available for Ohio, we can see that there was a total of 303,298 vehicle crashes. Out of those, there were:

  • 1,179 fatalities

Alcohol was responsible for 26.6% of the total traffic fatalities during that year and a total of 6.2% of the crash injuries.Alcohol-impaired drivers can cause serious injuries in a crash. It is not uncommon for us to see the following after an alcohol-impaired crash:
