When you are heading down the roadway and see a large commercial truck, you probably do your best to stay well away from it. However, that is not always possible, and you should never have to worry about the negligence of a truck driver or company causing you harm. If you need a Cleveland truck accident attorney, the team at Paulozzi LPA is ready to fight for the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to talk about a crash that occurred in Ohio involving a truck with an illegal height.

What happened in this case?

We are bringing you a case from a little bit out of our coverage area to highlight one of the many causes of truck accidents in Ohio. On July 10, a commercial semi-truck with an illegal trailer struck the underside of a bridge that was under construction. As a result of the impact, construction materials were dislodged from the bridge and struck a passenger car directly behind the truck. The driver of that vehicle suffered severe facial lacerations and other injuries. He was transported to the hospital but died on the way. The driver of the semi-truck, a 58-year-old man from Minnesota, was hauling a drop-deck trailer with ramps in an upright position. The ramps were illegal in height. This crash is still under investigation.

Truck crashes can be devastating

When we look at commercial truck crashes that cause injuries and fatalities, we often find that they are caused by driver negligence or truck failure. Driver negligent can take the form of:

  • Failing to follow state and federal laws regulating truck drivers, such as how long they can drive in between breaks, trailer weight, and trailer height.
  • Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Driving while distracted by phones or other devices

In many cases, these crashes occur due to vehicle failure of one or more of the following systems:

  • Tires and wheels
  • Suspension
  • Lighting
  • Brakes
  • Powertrain
  • Steering
  • Connections and hitch

Injuries from truck accidents can be severe, and victims often end up with massive medical bills and other hidden costs such as lost income, emotional and psychological damages, and even long-term care if they are disabled. Victims and their families should not be put into financial jeopardy due to another person’s mistakes.
